Frequently Asked Questions
How words and characters are counted, reading time, the readability score, keyword density, limits and privacy.
How does this word counter work?
Just type or paste your text into the box. The counter updates instantly — there's no button to press and nothing is sent to a server. The four headline numbers (words, characters, sentences and reading time) sit right above the text box so you always see your main result without scrolling, and the detailed stats appear below.
How are words counted?
A word is any sequence of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. So 'don't' counts as one word and 'state-of-the-art' counts as one too. This matches how Microsoft Word, Google Docs and most editors count, so your number will line up with what a teacher or editor expects.
What's the difference between characters with and without spaces?
'Characters' counts everything you typed, including spaces, line breaks and punctuation — this is the number most social networks and SEO tools use. 'Characters (no spaces)' removes whitespace, which is the figure some academic and translation jobs ask for. We show both so you're covered either way.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 225 words per minute, the well-studied average for adults reading on screen. Speaking time uses roughly 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and voice-overs. They're estimates to help you plan, not stopwatch-exact figures.
What is the readability score?
It's the Flesch Reading Ease formula, which scores text from 0 to 100 using average sentence length and syllables per word. Higher is easier: 60–70 is plain English most people read comfortably, while below 30 reads like dense academic or legal writing. We also show the Flesch–Kincaid U.S. grade level. Because the formula is purely structural, it only appears for natural English prose — random characters or non-English text won't be scored, since the number would be meaningless.
What is keyword density and why does it matter?
Keyword density is how often each word appears, shown as a percentage of your total words. Writers and SEOs use it to check they're on-topic without over-stuffing a single term. Toggle 'Hide common words' to skip filler like 'the' and 'and' and surface the words that actually carry your meaning.
Can I check character limits for Twitter, SEO and SMS?
Yes. The 'Will it fit?' section compares your character count against common limits — a 280-character tweet, a 160-character SMS, a 60-character SEO title, a 160-character meta description, plus Instagram and LinkedIn caps — with a bar that turns amber as you near the limit and red once you're over.
Is my text private?
Completely. Every count, score and chart is calculated in your browser with JavaScript — your text never leaves your device and nothing is stored or uploaded. You can safely paste confidential essays, client copy or unpublished drafts. It works offline once the page has loaded.
