Why does so much placeholder text start with 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet'?
That opening is the traditional, instantly recognisable start of the standard passage, so designers expect to see it. We default to it, but you can switch it off to get fully random filler from the first word — handy when you don't want that giveaway phrase in a screenshot.
Is Lorem Ipsum actual Latin?
Not quite. It's derived from a real Latin text by Cicero written in 45 BC, but it's been jumbled, clipped and altered over the centuries — words were cut and changed so it reads as nonsense. So it looks Latin and has the right rhythm and letter distribution, but it doesn't actually mean anything coherent.
