Frequently Asked Questions
How it works, privacy, MP3 vs M4A vs WAV, bitrate, the one-time engine download, formats and quality.
How do I convert a video to MP3?
Drop your video in, pick MP3 and a bitrate, then tap 'Extract audio'. The first time you use it, the audio engine (ffmpeg) downloads once, then it pulls out the soundtrack and gives you an MP3 to preview and download. Everything happens in your browser — the video is never uploaded.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely on your device using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your video and the resulting audio never leave your browser, there's no watermark, and nothing is stored. It even works offline after the engine has loaded once.
What's the difference between MP3, M4A and WAV?
MP3 is the universal choice — small files that play everywhere. M4A (AAC) is a bit more efficient at the same bitrate and common in the Apple ecosystem. WAV is uncompressed and lossless, so it's the highest quality but by far the largest file. For music and sharing, MP3 at 192–320 kbps is the sweet spot.
Which bitrate should I choose?
Higher bitrate means better quality and a bigger file. 320 kbps is near-CD quality, 192 kbps is an excellent balance most people can't distinguish from the original, and 128 kbps is fine for podcasts or speech where size matters. The live estimate shows roughly how big each option will be.
Why does it download something the first time?
The tool uses ffmpeg — the same engine behind most video software — compiled to run in your browser. That engine is about 30 MB and is fetched once on first use, then cached, so later conversions start instantly. It's the price of doing real audio extraction privately, without a server.
Can it extract audio from any video format?
It handles the common ones — MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV and more — as long as your browser can read the file. Whatever the source, you can output MP3, M4A or WAV. Very large or very long videos take longer and use more memory, so shorter clips convert fastest.
Does extracting audio reduce quality?
Extracting to WAV is lossless — it's an exact copy of the audio. Converting to MP3 or M4A re-encodes the sound, which is technically lossy, but at 192 kbps and above the difference is inaudible to almost everyone. You can't recover quality the original video didn't have, but you won't lose anything noticeable.
Is it really free with no watermark?
Yes — completely free, no sign-up, no limits and no watermark on the audio. Because the work happens in your browser rather than on our servers, there's nothing to meter, so you can convert as many videos as you like.
