Frequently Asked Questions
PPF interest, rate, lock-in, contribution limit and tax benefits.
How is PPF interest calculated?
PPF interest is compounded annually. Each year, interest is added on your balance plus that year's deposit: new balance = (previous balance + yearly deposit) × (1 + rate). This calculator repeats that for every year of the tenure and totals the interest for you.
What is the PPF interest rate?
The PPF rate is set by the government each quarter and has been 7.1% per year recently. The rate is pre-filled here, but you can change it to model a different rate or run a what-if scenario.
How long is the PPF lock-in period?
A PPF account matures in 15 years. After that you can extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without further contributions. Set the tenure above to 20, 25 or more years to see the effect of extending.
What is the maximum I can invest in PPF per year?
The maximum is ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, and the minimum is ₹500. The default of ₹1,50,000 shows the maximum-contribution scenario; enter your own amount to match your plan.
Is PPF tax-free?
PPF has EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) status in India: your contribution qualifies for a deduction under Section 80C, the interest earned is tax-free, and the maturity amount is tax-free. That's what makes the effective return attractive compared with a taxable deposit.
Is this PPF calculator free?
Yes. It's completely free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser, so your figures stay private and results are instant.
