Frequently Asked Questions
FD maturity formula, compounding, effective yield and tax.
How is FD maturity calculated?
A fixed deposit uses compound interest: Maturity = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t), where P is the principal, r is the annual rate as a decimal, n is how many times a year interest compounds, and t is the number of years. This calculator applies that formula and shows the interest you earn on top.
What compounding frequency do banks use for FDs?
Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly, though some offer monthly or half-yearly. More frequent compounding gives a slightly higher maturity for the same rate, which is why the calculator lets you choose — quarterly is the common default.
What is the effective yield on an FD?
The effective annual yield is the true yearly return once compounding is included. Because interest earns interest, a 7% FD compounded quarterly yields a little more than 7% per year effectively. The calculator shows this figure so you can compare deposits fairly.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes. In India, FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, and banks deduct TDS if interest crosses the threshold in a year. This calculator shows the gross maturity before tax — your actual in-hand return will be a little lower after tax.
Can I use this for a bank or company FD?
Yes. Enter the deposit amount, the interest rate the bank or company offers, the tenure and the compounding frequency, and you'll get the maturity value. It works for any cumulative (reinvestment) fixed deposit.
Is this FD calculator free?
Yes. It's completely free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser, so your figures stay private and results are instant.
